There are no statistics to back up my premise that dongles are here to stay forever other than the fact that dongles have been around about forever. Maybe longer. As much as members of the technorati elite politburo criticize Apple for new connector technology (Lightning, I’m looking at you) and the resultant need for dongles, they exist everywhere else in the world of techno-gadgets.
A dongle is a small piece of computer hardware that connects to a port on another device to provide it with additional functionality, or enable a pass-through to such a device that adds functionality
Got a USB jump drive? That’s a dongle device. Need an extra cable to connect that external device? That’s a dongle. Need to plug in that external display to your Mac? Dongle. Got an external SuperDrive to play that DVD? Dongle. Got an Amazon Fire TV or Google Chromecast? Dongle and dongle.
Cables and dongles are almost synonymous but not quite but the definition and the usage and the criticism really don’t matter much anymore so critics need to get over the displeasure of having a dongle.
Dongles are forever.
Anyone who criticizes only Apple for the mess of dongles we all need to use sometime or another is also a dongle.
Need to connect those old headphones with the headphone jack from the last century to a new iPhone? You’ll need a dongle.
Here you go.
- The iPhone dongle is still my $#@&ing nightmare
- It’s 2018 and dongle hell is still awful
- I have lived the USB-C #donglelife, here’s what you’re in for
- We didn’t choose the dongle life, we hate it
- These are the things Apple customers hate the most
OK, that last one has things like ‘Why is Apple Pencil not free with the iPad?’ The removal of the MagSafe connector is a good one, though. But you get the idea.
People hate dongles. That’s a hate that will last forever because dongles are forever. They’ve been around since the first connector didn’t fit to the second connector and as long as there is change and we need physical connections to various devices, there will be dongles.
To dongle haters:
Get over it because dongles are forever
