The world is less a village than we sometimes think. That’s especially true when we’re required to convert currency from one value to another, or convert miles into kilometers, or pounds and ounces into kilograms or grams, or temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit, and so on.
OS X comes with a built-in Dashboard Widget Unit Converter. It’s free. It’s easy. It’s also limited.
Not bad for free, right?
If you need more units converted from this to that, other options are available, including the popular Mila’s Tools for Mac, a true blue unit conversion calculator with more conversion options than I thought existed.
Instead of the less than a dozen conversion categories in Apple’s Unit Converter, Mila’s Tools adds more categories and more options to convert within each category.
For example, Mila’s Tools can do blood sugar conversions, capacitance conversions, even fractions and torque. There’s a conversion option for velocity as well as bits and bytes for the non-geek.
The app mirrors much of what is available in Mila’s Tools for iPhone and iPad. There are no dials to twirl, no settings to set, and not much to learn. Select the unit to convert, enter your value, and the app automatically converts the units as you type.
There’s a reason Mila’s Tools gets so many five star reviews (both Mac and iPhone). It’s easy to use, very fast, and converts about everything you can think of. There’s just not much to not like.
