If we live in the information age, then information is the dust of the 21st century. It’s everywhere. Information clutter abounds. Email, images, photos, web pages, bookmarks, notes, snippets of this or that. They clutter our Mac desktops and even our iPhones are infected. Here’s the tale of a great Mac app that I want on my iPhone.
Together, But Not Again
Together is one of those rare Mac apps that just seems to fit what you do. Provided what you do is gather and organize informational stuff—notes, snippets, bookmarks, PDFs, photos, images, movie clips.
Think of Together as iPhoto or iTunes for your stuff; all the digital information that crosses your eyes while you’re on your Mac each day, all neatly organized into a Library and Groups, everything within a click or two.
Together keeps track of everything, and it gets organized however you prefer, rather than training you to fit a static structure. There’s a built in word processor for notes.
Items you want to save and track can be dragged and dropped right into Together almost effortlessly. Drag and drop. Drag and drop where? Here’s the most beautiful part of a well crafted app.
Together has a pop out shelf. Grab and item and move it toward the shelf. It pops out, and you can drop whatever into the appropriate folder. Drag and drop.
Click the pop out tab on the shelf and you can browse or search whatever is stored in the Together Library. For now, Together syncs with MobileMe so you get information on multiple Macs.
If you try Together for a few days you’ll be impressed. It’s that elegant. But two issues come to mind. First, MobileMe is going away, so having an option to store Together Libraries on Dropbox or iCloud or another online service will be necessary.
Finally, there’s no iPhone version, and that’s a shame. Since the iPhone was launched, many of those gathering efforts are performed sans Mac, on the iPhone. Keeping those pieces of information synchronized together is also a necessity.
If you’re Mac only, though, go for it. It’s try before you buy, and on the Mac App Store.
