Last week my wife asked me if there was a way we could fax something on the Mac. Fax. How quaint. Do people still fax documents back and forth? Didn’t email and PDF’s kill faxing? Can you still buy a fax machine? In answer to her question, I mumbled something about once having a fax app on the Mac.
Not Your Father’s Fax App
Fax machines don’t cost much these days. Some all-in-one printers will print, scan, copy, and fax. Then I remembered PageSender. Nicely done. If you can print it, you can fax it. Or email it. But not ready for Mac OS X Lion.
There’s FaxDocument, which appears to be good for businesses who need to blast-o-fax a document to many numbers. There’s FaxFresh, a rather inexpensive app from the Mac App Store. Upload your document and it handles the faxing. $1.99 minimum, 25-cents per page. To start.
My search found half a dozen more Mac apps that handle faxing duties. Many had not been upgraded to handle Lion. Others were fax services, including PamFax, for those who fax often, but not often enough to have their own fax machine.
I just checked. Office Depot had a number of fax machines for well under $100. At the other end of the scale is 4-Sight Fax. This is not your father’s fax machine. Instead, it’s a full fledge fax server system for business.
It comes with network fax capability, broadcast fax capability, and allows users to send and receive fax documents directly from Macs or Windows PCs. For $495 it needs to do that and a whole lot more.
The folks who make 4-Sight Fax are serious about fax. Quaint technology, meet the digital age. Email to fax using .PDFs, .PNGs, and .TIFF files. Fax forward to email means customers get fax documents as email PDF attachments.
Not at your Mac or PC? Use any modern web browser and gain access to all the 4-Sight Fax services. Get text message notification of incoming faxes. The Mac app gives you faxing options galore. Indeed, features are so extensive they need videos to show you how it all works.
There’s a multi-page PDF document with all the details about how 4-Sight Fax can be integrated into your business operation, how it acts as a hub for all company-wide incoming and outgoing faxes. There’s a try-before-you-buy evaluation option.
Clearly, this is not the solution for my wife who merely needed to fax a few documents to a few people. Faxing may be quaint technology, but it’s not dead. But it can be remarkably expensive.
