Bento is not yet the database for the masses

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

I love databases and wish there was a database option in Apple’s iWork. Instead, Apple let FileMaker have their way with us and the result is Bento, billed as the personal database. It is. Bento is not the database for the masses.

I agree. Databases are hard. Bento at the first level is easy, so nearly anyone can use it. As soon as I started to customize one of the templates I like I found out just how difficult database design can be. It’s complicated. Stick to the templates and it’s easy.

I don’t know if I’m the masses or not, but I’ve really enjoyed using Bento. I find it easy to customise and really intuitive. My needs aren’t high, but for home use (in my case cataloguing a camera collection) it’s been excellent.
