Click 2 Crop: the fast and easy Mac photo editor

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

No carpenter or mechanic or plumber uses only a single tool to perform all their work. So it is with photo editing on your Mac. Sometimes, simple is better.

Crescent Wrench Or Hammer?

My father’s home toolbox was full of tools, but the one that got used the most was the adjustable crescent wrench. Sometimes it was a wrench. Sometimes a hammer. Sometimes a mini crowbar.

My digital toolbox is full of tools, too, but tends to have specific tools for specific functions. After all, I don’t want to own a drill, I want holes. But to get the right holes requires the right drill and drill bit.

Click 2 Crop is a nifty, simple, nearly one trick pony. It’s a tool to crop photos on your Mac.

Wait a minute. Doesn’t iPhoto do that already? Sure. Even the Mac’s Preview app can crop images and photos, though it’s rather cumbersome to use. What makes Click 2 Crop better? From the developer:

Let’s face a very real-like user case: imagine that your friend comes to you with a thumb-drive full of photos (500 photos) of his latest vacation in Rio. He wants to see these photos with you. Also he asks you to help to find and prepare few best photos for printing and for display them in a digital photo frame.

Try that in Preview or iPhoto. It’s a one-at-a-time process that could take forever. How long does it take in Click 2 Crop? It can do whole folders of photos in seconds, or, for precise crops for each photo, in seconds, even one at a time.

The interface is a bit cluttered but the process is elegant. Click the button in the upper right corner to find and open images or photos.

Your photo appears live on the right, cropping version on the left. Click to view full screen. Change the image angle. Click to change to black and white, sepia tones, or even invert. Add text, sharpen, add a border or a logo. Use the arrow buttons to move from one image in a folder to another.

Click 2 Crop lets you change the aspect ratio of an image and comes with a number of presets for nearly any PC or Mac screen size. Preferences are many and equally straightforward.

Simple Is Better

There are plenty of photo and image editors for Mac users. Dozens. The more popular apps, including iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, and others are good for both simple effects and changes, but mostly one image at a time.

If each image requires an adjustment or effect or a specific crop and in different combinations, Click 2 Crop makes it easy and fast, without opening one file at a time. Dump them all into a folder on your Mac, select the first one, and being editing.

Click 2 Crop isn’t a crescent wrench, but it’s a tool that will get used more often than the more expensive and well-known Mac apps.
